PickSnap product facts

A local desktop photo culling tool for marking, rating and comparing photographs before editing. Updated October 9, 2026.

Desktop application

PickSnap 1.1.0 targets Apple Silicon Macs and Windows x64. Download packages and checksums. English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Japanese interfaces are available.

Selection and detail

  • Quick Cull: P/K to keep, X to reject and U to mark pending. Auto Advance is optional; Z undoes a decision.
  • Hero Selects: ratings 1–5; S marks a five-star favorite.
  • Fit, 100% and 200% viewing, with available EXIF camera/exposure data. 100% uses the image's natural dimensions as CSS dimensions; it does not promise physical pixel mapping on Retina screens.
  • Burst groups use capture time, camera identity and parent directory. The grouping interval can be adjusted; groups can be manually split or merged. Camera make/model is the fallback when body serial is absent.
  • C pins a reference. Side-by-side comparison synchronizes zoom/pan; B switches a single viewport manually between reference and candidate.

Formats and limitations

JPEG, PNG and WebP are the primary supported photo workflow. The scanner also recognizes TIFF, HEIC/HEIF, AVIF and MP4/MOV/M4V, but recognizing an extension does not guarantee decoding or full-size display. The tested Mac thumbnail/EXIF pipeline cannot fully process HEIC/HEIF/AVIF; use JPEG copies. TIFF full-size display depends on the platform's WebView. Video thumbnails require external FFmpeg; playback depends on the WebView's codecs.

Camera RAW files, including CR2/CR3, NEF, ARW and DNG, are currently unsupported. Read the RAW workflow guide.

Suggested picks use edge/exposure heuristics and filename grouping. They are not a trained AI model and do not detect faces or assess eyes. No measured 3,000-photo performance result is published.

Local files and export

Selection records and caches stay on the computer. Desktop export creates selected photo copies and XMP rating sidecars; supported crop/rotation adjustments affect copies. Source photographs remain unchanged. XMP interpretation depends on the receiving editor; there is no automatic transfer of JPEG ratings to companion RAW files.

Browser demonstration

The web workspace is a limited demonstration. It reads selected photos locally without uploading them, keeps decisions in memory and clears them on reload. It exports a JSON selection record only. Use the desktop app for photo copies and XMP sidecars.
